A Fresh Look at Turboshift Triads

A Fresh Look at Turboshift Triads

The previous post (A New Look at Highlighting Turboshifts) emphasized drybrushing over a Turboshift with a similarly-colored Metallic to jazz up a model. This post will expand upon this idea by examining Turboshifts highlighting other Turboshifts.

Many of you may remember three sets of Turboshifts released during Turbo Dork's early days —Chill Out, Sky Above, and Cheat Day. Each set contained three paints that were designed to be able to be layered over one another. The set names have long been dropped and one of the paints has even been replaced. (Sweet Dreams is now Dream On).

I have always liked the concept and wanted to find other combinations of existing Turboshifts that would work together. This post presents ten such combinations: two old ones, one slightly modified one, and seven new ones. I challenged myself to get as many Turboshifts as possible in a triad.

For this post, I took ten of our golem swatch models sprayed black and handpainted each with a different dark Turboshift. I then picked two lighter Turboshifts for each base layer paint with a similar color scheme. Lastly, I layered the chosen lighter Turboshifts over the darker one for each of the ten models.

The top row for each photo below depicts the three individual paints that make up the triad with the final combination shown below them.

Chill Out - Crystal Cavern, Ice to Never, and Wavelength

Sky Above - Cloud Nine, Miami Sunset, and Lunar Eclipse

Updated Cheat Day - Sugar Rush, Dream On, and Let Them Eat Cake

Blue-green/Purple - 4D Glasses, 3D Glasses, and Skyrat

Orange/Gold - Afterburner, Ground Is Lava, and Molten Mantle

Purples - Blue Raspberry, Cyberia, and Galaxia

Green/Gold - Electrum, Radium, and Laserface

Greens - Forrest Flux, Scarab, and Grave Robber

Greens - Leviathan, Peacock, and Cold Open

Pinks/Silver - Shellshocked, Dark Ritual, and Dark Net

Using complementary Turboshifts over one another is a unique way to create a new shifting look. I included 30 of the 33 Turboshifts as part of a triad. However, the combinations that I picked here are just suggestions. May this be an inspiration to go experiment.
