A Further Look at Highlighting Turboshifts

I have previously posted suggestions on using Turbo Dork paints to highlight a Turboshift. A New Look at Highlighting Turboshifts emphasized drybrushing with a Metallic paint with a color similar to one of the shift colors. A Fresh Look at Turboshift Triads revisited the concept of sets of Turboshifts that can be layered over one another.

I recently called for new post ideas on the Turbo Dorks Facebook page. Jay Low Fidelity responded by asking for a post similar to the previous one, but with the shadow tones instead of the midrange tones shown in the original post. In addition, Jay Arr subsequently asked for a highlight color specifically for Laserface to emphasize the magenta. My response of Miami Sunset sparked an ongoing discussion about using Turboshifts to highlight other Turboshifts.

This post provides my thoughts on which Metallic paints use over the dark Turboshifts as a sister post to A New Look at Highlighting Turboshifts. In addition, I have two general comments about using Metallics on top of Turboshifts: (1) edge highlighting a Turboshift with a Metallic can make things pop nicely; however, (2) highlighting a Turboshift with a Metallic can potentially lock the look of the shift towards one direction. You can see some of the latter illustrated in the examples below.

Thinking more about layering Turboshifts over Turboshifts prompted me to add a Supplement to A Fresh Look at Turboshift Triads with an additional Laserface example. I think this Triad post provides the best suggestions for using Turboshifts over Turboshifts. Adding three Turboshifts together radically changes the overall look, but using a single Turboshift as a highlight acts more like a Metallic. Basically, my recommendation would be to pick a two-paint combination and go for it.

For this post, I broke out more of our Golem swatch models and sprayed them black. I then picked six shadow Turboshifts to serve as the base layer and two Metallic colors as highlights. I painted three models with each Turboshift leaving one as is, drybrushing the second with one of the Metallics, and drybrushing the third with the other Metallic. The drybrushing was done with a classic flat, stiff drybrush. The highlighting is heavy-handed, but was done to demonstrate the effect. Use a soft brush or stick to edging for a lighter effect.

The six examples that I painted are depicted below. The left golem is the Turboshift alone, the middle has a Metallic, and the right has a second Metallic options. Further suggestions for the other six shadow Turboshifts can be found below the photo section.

The following are my suggestions for potential Metallic highlighting over the other shadow Turboshift that were not illustrated above.

Dark Ritual ---
     People Eater
     Summoning Sickness

Galaxia ---
     People Eater
     Silver Fox

Grave Robber ---
     Death By
     Gordian Knot

Lunar Eclipse ---
     Life on Mars
     People Eater

Molten Mantle ---
     Death By
     Red Queen

Conclusion

As shown previously and again in this post, highlighting a Turboshift is an easy way to individualize a model with extra color. It should be noted, however, that all of the Metallic colors shown here are just my suggestions. Have fun exploring other options.
